TLC and the NSTP-PwC Malaysian Humanitarian Award (MHA) 2005
This year the award has three categories:
On the 14th of November the winners received the award from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. The winner of each category received a RM 20,000 cash reward as well an additional RM 20,000 to be given to a charitable organisation of their choice. The Malaysian Humanitarian Award is jointly organised by NSTP & PricewaterhouseCoopers. TV3 is the official broadcaster and the official sponsor is ‘ecmlibra’. Balasupramaniam Krishnan won in the Young Humanitarian Category for his
work as a Malaysian Volunteer with the Fire & Rescue Association,
which he established and presides. He volunteered in Bam and Aceh to
conduct search and rescue missions. On top of this, he also runs various
safety programs for kids and older people. The Team Humanitarian Award went to The National Cancer Society for organising a whole range of programs to raise awareness about cancer. They also organised free early detection programs, provide free counselling to Malaysians who are impacted by cancer, moderate cancer support groups, conduct hospital visits and subsidize mammogram and pap smears for rural Malaysians. Cecil Rajendra won the Life Time Humanitarian title. Cecil has been involved in humanitarian work for mote than 30 years. He founded the country’s first rural Legal Aid Centre and pioneered the Bar’s legal aid scheme which has handled over 150,000 pro bono cases for farmers, fishermen, factory workers, asylum seekers and orang asli since 1980.
