Fire Hydrant Adoption Programme

Fire Hydrants are indispensable during a fire emergency.  However members of the public failed to realize the importance of keeping such fire-fighting equipment in good working condition.

During spot checks by K. Bala and his team of volunteers, a number of fire hydrants were found to be unserviceable; some could not be easily located as they were covered by mud or bushes. Most of the hydrants were found to be non-functioning and some with keys missing from the concrete boxes.

One of the earliest community service project initiated by K. Bala, the Fire Hydrant Adoption Campaign was first launched in 1990.  He gathered the neighbours together to check and ensure all fire hydrants in their vicinity are in working condition in order to avoid breakdowns during fire emergencies.

This campaign was successfully carried out “gotong royong” style and within the first year, more than 1,800 fire hydrants were cleaned and serviced.

Members of the community are encouraged to do spot checks on the nearby fire hydrants and if they are found to be unserviceable, they are to lodge reports with the Fire Department.
